What are Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs)?

Essential fatty acids are a group of unsaturated fatty acids that are essential for growth and body function. They include linolenic, linoleic and arachidonic. The most essential of the acids are linoleic and arachidonic, which are involved in metabolism, transportation of fats and the maintenance of cell membranes;  linolenic and arachidonic acids can be synthesised by the body and linoleic cannot.

Omega 6 fatty acids and Omega 3 fatty acids are the two types of fatty acids that are essential.  In the average modern-day diet, most people receive fairly adequate amounts of Omega 6 fatty acids but certainly not enough Omega 3. The consumption of Omega 3 fatty acids has significantly declined in the West over the last 50 years therefore supplementation here is suggested. Essential fatty acids are also needed for the growth and development of children (this beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 2 g of ALA and a daily intake of 10g of LA) - click here for EFSA scientific opinion.

Omega 3 oils can generally be found in fatty fish, deep green vegetables and certain seeds and grains; they contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is metabolised into DHA in the body. DHA can be found in high concentration in the grey matter of the brain and the retina of the eye; DHA is instrumental in the function of brain cell membranes.

Omega 9 fatty acids are not classed as essential fatty acids, as they can be manufactured by the human body from unsaturated fat. Having said that, restricted diets such as veganism and vegetarianism may require greater dietary input.
